Your BFF is Yinka Shonibare!

Yinka Shonibare is an artist who brings paintings to life! Like you, he is inspired by other people's art and often recreates famous paintings in the form of installations, like this one.

Shonibare was born in London and grew up between the UK and Nigeria. This is why he considers himself ‘bi-cultural’ (bi meaning two). His work asks questions and opens up debates about identity. For example, in this sculpture 'The Swing', the mannequin’s skin is dark, instead of its original white, and her clothing is made of a bright African print. What does being British mean to you? And do you think your ideas about Britishness are the same as Shonibare’s, or even as those of your friends?

Cool! You are both inspired by nature.

Eliasson often uses natural elements in his work, like light, water and air. You might even have seen this work, which is one of his most popular installations to date, in the Tate Modern. This is ‘The Weather Project’, the giant ‘sun’ he created in the Turbine Hall! Eliasson thinks the weather is so important to our society, and this was one way of bringing a part of London into the building. The set up of the sun actually involved a wide screen back-lit by about 200 lamps!

Look at that! Your BFF is Lubaina Himid!

Lubaina Himid is a British artist who was one of the first artists involved in the Black Arts movement of the 1980s. You both love to explore new undiscovered places!

Himid’s art focuses on themes of cultural history and reclaiming identities. It’s the kind of art that can be called ‘activist art’, because it is all about addressing political and social issues. This painting is called ‘Between The Two My Heart is Balanced’. It is made up of patches of colour with large, visible brushstrokes. It suggests the struggle for belonging faced by migrants who have to travel across the sea. Although it was painted in 1991, it is still extremely relevant today.

What do you most like to do on Saturdays?

Your favourite kind of homework…

You are most inspired by:

The best thing about your BFF is:

Pick your favourite kind of weather:

You and your BFF like to go on adventures:

Your favourite kind of music is:

Your favourite kind of weekend involves:

You might like Left Right Quiz: Which Moustache Should You Have?
